10 US Cities Where Parking is Practically Free (Almost!)
If you live in a city, parking is probably a constant headache and expense. But have you ever wondered just how cheap it could cost to park in different areas across the US?
Growing up in New Jersey, I always felt a bit of dread driving into Manhattan. The city’s excitement was always dampened by the fear of parking garage prices increasing every time I looked at the signs.
A recent study by the parking app SpotHero reveals that monthly parking rates in major cities nationwide range from $200 to more than $600. But there are actually places where parking doesn’t empty your wallet.
According to research by SpotHero and Zutobi on the lowest prices for three-hour parking, these are the ten cheapest US cities for parking.
Phoenix, Arizona
Lowest Amount for 3-Hour Parking: $3.50
Paying less than a fancy coffee for three hours of parking sounds like a dream. In Phoenix, where the sun blazes, you can park for just $3.50 for three hours.
As the fifth largest city in the US, you will definitely want a car to get around. With all that space, at least you won’t have to drive around in circles looking for parking!
San Antonio, Texas
Lowest Amount for 3-Hour Parking: $3.00
San Antonio has more than just the Alamo. Learn about the Texas independence at the cost of very affordable parking.
With a mere $3.00 for three hours, you can explore the Alamo or take a leisurely stroll along the River Walk without stressing about where you parked.
Even though street parking may be cheap, from my experience, not all the parking garages near downtown share the same story.
Tucson, Arizona
Lowest Amount for 3-Hour Parking: $3.00
Tucson may be hot, but I was pleasantly surprised by how fun this city turned out to be, as long as you don’t head there in the sweltering summers. Take a scenic drive through Saguaro National Park or eat some of the best Mexican food north of the border is a must.
And at just $3.00 for three hours of parking, you’ll have more money to spend exploring this hidden gem of a city.
Dallas, Texas
Lowest Amount for 3-Hour Parking: $3.00
Everything might be bigger in Dallas, but parking prices sure aren’t. Tied again with the others, you can explore the sprawling city without a hefty parking bill.
Drink an artisanal coffee in the Bishop Arts District after seeing the JFK Memorial. I even just parked at the JFK museum all day, and walked the whole of the very walkable downtown.
Louisville, Kentucky
Lowest Amount for 3-Hour Parking: $2.50
Louisville is known for its bourbon, derby, and hospitality, but it’s also great for cheap parking. Enjoy stress-free parking that leaves you time to explore the Louisville Slugger Museum or the riverside.
The city’s welcoming spirit extends to every aspect, so you can soak up the southern charm at your own pace.
Memphis, Tennessee
Lowest Amount for 3-Hour Parking: $2.50
Memphis knows a thing or two about blues, BBQ, and bargain parking. Take your time immersing yourself in the city’s rich musical heritage, from Beale Street to the National Civil Rights Museum.
The affordability makes it easy to spend more time enjoying the sights and eating delicious BBQs and less time worrying about the meter.
El Paso, Texas
Lowest Amount for 3-Hour Parking: $2.00
I’m not surprised El Paso would be on this list. Remote as can be, this city borders Mexico and sprawls in the middle of a desert. Park your car for views of the Franklin Mountains and treat yourself to some authentic tacos.
Houston, Texas
Lowest Amount for 3-Hour Parking: $2.00
For how big Houston is, it’s a surprising relief when it comes to parking prices. Exploring the city’s world-class museums or grabbing a bite in the lively Montrose neighborhood can cost as little as $2.00 for three hours of parking.
With a thriving food scene and endless activities, you’ll want to save money to experience all Houston offers.
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Lowest Amount for 3-Hour Parking: $1.63
Tulsa’s parking prices are as low as the Oklahoma plains. A city with rich history and Art Deco architecture, you can explore everything from the downtown to the Arkansas River without emptying your pockets. Tulsa’s small-town feel and big-city perks make it easy to relax and enjoy your day.
Cleveland, Ohio – Cheapest in the Country
Lowest Amount for 3-Hour Parking: $1.50
According to Zutobi’s research, Cleveland tops this list as the city with the cheapest parking in the US. The lowest parking per hour only costs $0.50. There’s not much you can still buy in the US with that kind of change.
Spend your extra cash catching a Cleveland Guardians game or visiting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. End the day with a walk on the waterfront in this underrated city.
