In a country as vast and varied as the USA, it’s easy to overlook the countless things that make it a unique place to live and visit. Despite our diverse backgrounds and opinions, people across the internet have come together to appreciate the small, wonderful things we may take for granted.

So, here are 26 things that people agree the USA gets right because sometimes, it’s important to focus on the positives, too!

1. National & State Parks

America has 63 national parks and tons of state parks, keeping some of the most amazing landscapes you’ll ever see! These places are genuinely jaw-dropping, from red rock deserts to pine forests, barren prairies, and bare-faced mountain ranges.

Roosevelt knew what he was doing when he claimed these areas as national parks. Today, you can find wildlife reserves anywhere you go, where you can hike, swim, kayak, and camp to your heart’s content.

2. The Smithsonian Institution

It’s hard to beat a museum experience that costs nothing but time. With over 20 museums and a zoo in Washington, DC, NYC, and VA, the Smithsonian Institution is all free!

This exceptional network serves interests from the world of aviation and space exploration to ancient dinosaur fossils at the Museum of Natural History.

3. Public Libraries

“I am a naturalized US citizen, have been living here for 12 years now and I am still in awe and disbelief at how amazing public libraries are here,” one amazed resident shared.

When I was a kid, the libraries served as community centers where you could take out any book and offered everything from internet access to educational programs. As an adult, a library card can get you book licenses right onto your phone with the “Libby” app.

4. Vacation Variety

You don’t need a passport to find adventure in America. You can enjoy nearly any kind of vacation you can think of without ever having to leave the country.

If you crave beaches, go to California. For islands, go to Hawaii. Ski resorts, deserts, big cities, small rural towns, sports, or music festivals—you name it, the USA has it.

5. Foodie Haven

“I never thought I’d be able to eat Ethiopian food in my life or Mongolian, but being in the US made it possible,” one Seattle resident noted. “You can find any kind of food from anywhere in the world if you look hard enough.”

Living in America means you can go on a culinary journey around the world without ever leaving your neighborhood. Have sushi on Monday, tacos on Tuesday, pierogi, or pad Thai, or pizza, there’s always a restaurant serving up authentic flavors any day of the week.

6. Free Water

One of the most delightful surprises for many visitors to the US is the ubiquitous free water at restaurants. “You go to a restaurant, and they just give you a gigantic glass of ice water for free.

While other countries might charge you for a bottle, American eateries keep you hydrated at no extra cost.

7. Americans with Disabilities Act

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a game-changer for making public spaces accessible. “I didn’t realize how much reserved parking spots by the door, wide sidewalks that must be clean, handicap bathrooms, and having ramps at the entrance were important until my brother became wheelchair bound,” one person pointed out.

While the US isn’t perfect, it leads the way in making sure everyone gets a fair shot at participating in daily life. The impact of ADA is felt in countless ways, from inclusive playgrounds to accessible public transportation.

8. Hitting the Open Road

“No one, I mean no one, does road trips better than the US. It’s one of the most fun things you can do if you’re here,” a local passionately declared.

With an awesome freeway system, you can cruise from New Jersey to California or North Dakota to Key West, FL. The open road gives you that classic American vibe of freedom and adventure.

9. Cultural Melting Pot

“You can have a group full of different types of people & it’s always a good time.” Most countries are homogenous and don’t face the same challenges, but America’s diversity is its superpower.

Sure, there are issues, but where else can you find such a diverse group of friends in a classroom, workplace, or even at a backyard BBQ. The blend of cultures makes interactions exciting and enriching.

10. Free Public Restrooms

One thing you’ll miss when you leave the US is the glorious free public restroom. “I never knew pay toilets existed until I left the US,” one American exclaimed.

In Europe and Asia, you might have to shell out some coins just to take a leak. Here, you can wander through any park, grocery store, or highway without worry.

11. Individualism Over Conformity

In the US, people may judge, but generally, you can pretty much live your life however you want without much societal pressure to conform. “There’s very little consequence in doing things drastically different from your neighbors.”

You want pink flamingos in your front yard and a UFO-shaped mailbox? How else do you think all those Route 66 roadside attractions got there.

This freedom means you can truly express yourself, whether it’s through your career, hobbies, or even your home decor.

12. Freedom of Speech: Complain Without Consequence

One of the greatest perks of living in the US is your right to vent about the government or really anything without fearing repercussions. “I can moan about and criticize the government and/or president and not fear (official) retribution.”

Try doing that in some other country, and you might find yourself in hot water. Debating politics over dinner or on social media might get contentious, but the fact is, we still can.

13. Career Flexibility Anytime

It’s never too late for American workers to try their hand at different fields. “There’s red tape, but you still can work in any industry you want in the US. You can also switch career paths and start over at any time.”

Want to go from being an accountant to a pastry chef? I went from tech consultant to travel writer. It’s not always easy, but the flexibility to pivot careers offers incredible opportunities for personal growth and fulfillment.

14. Air Conditioning: The Cool Comfort We Take for Granted

“Central air conditioning is something we take for granted in the US,” noted one grateful resident. While Europeans may cite eco-friendliness for not designing central AC in their homes, there’s nothing quite like being able to escape into a cool room on a blazing summer day.

Nearly every building, from homes to hotels, keeps the AC humming. Sure, it’s a pro and con, but mostly a pro when you’re melting under the sun.

15. Tech Giant Dreamland

America is home to some of the biggest names and game-changers in technology. From cloud computing to revolutionary gadgets, their impact is felt globally. Plus, these tech giants create high-paying jobs and boost the economy.

As a foreigner aptly put it, “Junior software engineers in the US outearn the average CEO in my country.”

16. Athletic Paradox: Fat but Fit

The USA somehow manages to be both “one of the fattest countries in the world and one of the most athletic countries in the world.”

It’s a bizarre yet fascinating juxtaposition. On the one hand, you’ve got your couch potatoes; on the other, you’ve got elite athletes dominating in the Olympics and a country host to some of the toughest marathons in the world.

The fitness and sports culture is strong, with gyms and fitness centers almost as common as fast-food joints.

17. Turn Right on Red

One of the coolest traffic laws in the US is the ability to turn right on red. This simple rule helps keep traffic flowing smoothly and saves countless minutes for drivers nationwide. While it might seem insignificant, it’s one of those conveniences you can’t live without once you get used to.

18. Free Refills

“Unlimited free refills” is a phrase that can make anyone’s day better. Order a soda knowing you can get it topped up as many times as you want without worrying about extra charges. It’s one of those small luxuries that make dining out in the US just a bit sweeter but also ridiculous to foreigners.

19. Friendly Folks

Despite what you might see in the media, Americans can be incredibly kind-hearted. “People going out of their way to be particularly kind to you, with no expectation in return, just because it’s the kind thing to do,” sums it up perfectly.

We also love small talk, and waiting in any line is grounds for a conversation starter.

20. The “American Dream” Confidence

The rags-to-riches narrative is often called “the American Dream.” It reflects the belief that anyone can achieve success with sheer determination. While not everyone will achieve it, there is always an air of optimism to shooting for the stars.

“Confidence in themselves too. Americans aren’t afraid to speak up, they’re not afraid to sing/dance/whatever.” This fearlessness is refreshing and often inspiring as people come up with creative side hustles, participate in an ice sculpting class, or join a chorus.

21. Marketing: America’s Secret Sauce

“I once asked a German woman what she thought was great about America, and she said, ‘Marketing.'”

The US has turned marketing into an art form, turning even the simplest products into must-haves. From million-dollar Super Bowl ads to viral social media campaigns, no country does it better.

It’s like they have a sixth sense of what makes people tick. This knack for promotion is why American brands are recognized worldwide.

22. Hollywood Entertainment and Beyond

The entertainment industry in America is thriving. “The variety, the output, the grand scale—no other country comes close!”

Whether it’s blockbuster movies, binge-worthy TV shows, or chart-topping music, the industry churns out heavy-hitter content, keeping audiences hooked year-round.

23. Public Domain & Fair Use

This is probably little talked about, but unlike many countries that don’t recognize fair use, America’s legal framework encourages creativity. This simple legal loophole allows artists, writers, and filmmakers to build upon existing works without getting sued into oblivion. It’s a system that fosters innovation and keeps the creative juices flowing.

24. People Know Their Way Around a Grill

Barbecue is a smoky, saucy gift from the South and Midwest. There’s nothing quite like sinking your teeth into some tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs. Each region has its varieties, like Texas brisket, Carolina pulled pork, or Kansas City burnt ends, and they’re all good.

Tell that to some restaurants with people waiting out the door for hours every Sunday afternoon.

25. Smoke-Free Zones

Even though vaping has put a damper on this somewhat, America’s anti-smoking movement has largely been a huge success.

Not smoking inside is a norm now, and as a non-smoker, it’s wonderful. You can walk into a restaurant, office, or even a bar without getting a face full of tobacco smoke.

26. Scientific Research

When it comes to throwing dollars into scientific research, the USA is miles ahead of any other country. “Look at the list of Nobel prize winners by country. Silicon Valley for tech, Boston region for medicine.” The sheer volume of research here is mind-blowing.

America’s R&D spending surpasses the combined budgets of small nations. This investment leads to groundbreaking discoveries in medicine, aerospace, and technology. It’s a magnet for talent, attracting the best and brightest minds from around the globe.
