More Than 1,000 Flights Delayed at This Major US Airport in One Day—Here’s What Went Wrong

Travelers flying through Chicago on June 4 hit a wall of delays that stretched from early morning into the late hours. Chicago O’Hare International Airport saw 1,001 delayed flights in a single day, the highest total of any airport worldwide, according to Flightradar24. The slowdown disrupted connections across the U.S. and Europe and highlighted the pressure major hubs face as summer travel ramps up.
O’Hare handled more scheduled seats this June than any month in years. That growth collided with operational slowdowns, creating one of the most disrupted travel days in recent memory.
O’Hare’s Logjam Started Early and Didn’t Let Up
Out of all scheduled departures from O’Hare on June 4, 82% were delayed. United Airlines, American Airlines, and their regional carriers were hit hardest. The pattern wasn’t just minor holdups. Some departures, like American Airlines flight AA126 to Madrid, took off more than three hours late. Others—including early cargo runs like Air Canada’s 4 a.m. service to Toronto—didn’t leave until nearly 10 a.m.
The scale of the slowdown wasn’t isolated. Even long-haul departures, usually prioritized for punctuality, were held back. Flight AA150 to Paris left more than an hour behind schedule. Regional and domestic travelers faced even tighter logjams, compounding the effect across connecting flights nationwide.
As of midday June 5, nearly 400 more O’Hare departures were already behind schedule.

Why O’Hare’s Delays Matter Far Beyond Chicago
When O’Hare stalls, the impact isn’t local. It’s a major U.S. hub for both United and American, with more than 4.6 million scheduled seats this month alone, per OAG. Its role in transatlantic travel and Midwest-to-coast connections means that delays here affect flights out of smaller regional airports and other global gateways alike.
Travelers flying through Minneapolis, Detroit, and even as far as Newark or Miami often connect through O’Hare, so the consequences of this one-day disruption have carried into the rest of the week. Even passengers booked with airlines unaffiliated with United or American could see knock-on effects from missed slots and overburdened ground operations.
Flight disruptions at major hubs also expose how much the system leans on tight scheduling, especially during peak travel periods. One chain reaction can take hours—or in some cases, days—to fully unwind.
Europe Was Hit Too, But No Airport Matched O’Hare’s Numbers
Frankfurt International Airport, Germany’s busiest, ranked third globally for delays on June 4. It saw 593 late departures and 17 cancellations, affecting routes across the continent. Lufthansa, which dominates traffic through Frankfurt, canceled multiple domestic and regional routes including Munich, Zurich, and Salzburg.
Other long-haul flights like Delta’s DL15 to Atlanta and Finnair’s to Helsinki didn’t operate as planned either. Thai Airways had to return one of its aircraft mid-flight, canceling its return leg to Bangkok.
As of June 5, Frankfurt’s delay count had already crossed 500 again, trailing only O’Hare.
Travel Volume Is Up, So Are Delays
Scheduled capacity at O’Hare has grown 10% year-over-year, according to OAG data. As international travel returns to pre-2020 levels, high-traffic hubs like Chicago and Frankfurt face growing pressure to keep schedules on track. Any weather event, staffing shortage, or equipment issue can now affect more passengers than ever before.
With summer now in full swing, airlines and airports are bracing for volume levels not seen in half a decade. June 4 may not be the last day we see these kinds of numbers.
