Sample One Day in Joshua Tree Itinerary

One day in Joshua Tree National Park is enough time to get a good overview of the park. Most of the attractions are in a straight line, so you will just follow the main road most of the way.

Here’s a sample day trip itinerary route from the entrances near Yucca Valley (north) to Cactus City (south). It’s the exact route I took my first time in the park.

• Start the day early to catch the golden rays illuminating the stunning rock formations and Joshua Trees.
• Stroll through Hidden Valley, an easy one-mile loop through giant rock formations.
• Take a break and have an early picnic lunch amidst the scenic beauty of Keys View, with panoramic views of the Coachella Valley and San Andreas Fault.
• Leisurely drive through the park’s iconic Joshua Tree-lined roads, stopping at various points of interest such as Skull Rock and Arch Rock.
• Rock climb or boulder on some of the park’s renowned climbing routes, or opt for a guided climbing lesson if you’re a beginner.
• Visit the Cholla Cactus Garden during sunset for a surreal scene of furry cactus silhouettes.

Morning: Go for a Desert Hike

Recommended Morning Hiking Trails

1. Hidden Valley Nature Trail: This easy 1-mile loop trail is perfect for beginners and is surrounded by massive rock formations.

2. Barker Dam: This easy 1.3-mile loop trail leads to a historic water storage reservoir and offers opportunities for wildlife spotting.

3. Lost Horse Mine: This moderate 4-mile trail leads to the remains of a historic gold mine and offers panoramic views of the park.

4. Split Rock: This moderate 2.5-mile trail takes you to a massive split rock formation and provides stunning views of the surrounding Joshua Tree forests. Note that this is closer to attractions in the afternoon.

Before hiking, check for trail conditions and carry plenty of water, sunscreen, and a trail map. Start your hike early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds.

Lunch at Keys View

Keys View from this vantage point gives you an unobstructed view of the Coachella Valley, with its rolling hills and stunning desert landscape stretching out in front.

It’s a bit out of the way, being a 20-minute detour from the main road. But it’s a great place to pop out the picnic lunch and snacks with a great view. There are a few hikes along the way to the viewpoint, like Lost Horse Mine Trailhead and the small detour, Cap Rock.

Sightseeing Joshua Tree’s Rock Formations

After a satisfying lunch, it’s time to continue the adventure to the park’s center. What really sets this park apart from the actual Joshua Trees is the fascinating rock formations that dot the landscape. Two notable formations that are worth visiting are Skull Rock and Arch Rock.

Skull Rock

Skull Rock is a popular attraction that gets its name from its striking resemblance to a human skull. This natural rock formation has been shaped by years of erosion, resulting in a remarkable sculpture that captures the imagination.

Located along the main road through the park, Skull Rock is easily accessible and is a popular spot for visitors to take photos and climb around at.

Arch Rock

Another impressive rock formation in Joshua Tree is Arch Rock. As its name suggests, this formation features a natural arch created by wind and water over thousands of years. Arch Rock is located in the White Tank Campground area and can be reached by a short hiking trail.

Both these spots do get pretty busy in the middle of the day.

Scale the Walls Rockclimbing

Joshua Tree National Park is renowned for its world-class rock climbing opportunities, with over 8,000 climbing routes, 2,000 boulder problems, and numerous natural gaps.

Climbers of all ability levels can find challenges suited to their skills within the park. But climbing in Joshua Tree requires careful planning and research to ensure climbers have the necessary skills, equipment, and knowledge of the area.

As the sun hits golden hours, the cute and furry cacti create a stunning silhouette against the horizon.

The Cholla Cactus Garden is home to a dense concentration of cholla cacti, also known as teddy bear cacti due to their fuzzy appearance.

Tips for Enjoying the Sunset

To fully enjoy the sunrise in Cholla Cactus Garden, consider these tips:

• The garden is the furthest attraction, so make sure you leave enough driving time and arrive at least 30 minutes earlier to secure a prime viewing spot.
• Dress warmly, as after the sun sets, the desert can be chilly.
• There is absolutely no cell service here at all! I saw someone get locked out of their car, and have to break their own windows to get in again.

Evening Stargazing

The park’s location away from major cities and its dark skies make it an ideal spot for observing the wonders of the night sky.

To fully enjoy the stargazing experience, I recommend staying in a campground within the park. I once stayed in Jumbo Rock Campground, and having the moon light up the boulders under the starry sky was just so romantic to say the least.

I 100% understand why Rufus du Sol would have made his incredible DJ set in this place!

Best Spots for Stargazing

If you’re looking for the best spots in Joshua Tree National Park to stargaze, here are a few recommendations:

• Skull Rock – This iconic rock formation offers a unique foreground for stargazing and the chance to witness the stars above it.
• Keys View – Known for its stunning sunset views, Keys View also provides an excellent vantage point for observing the night sky. The panoramic vista allows for an unobstructed view of the stars.
• Belle Campground – Located in the southern part of the park, Belle Campground offers a peaceful setting with minimal light pollution.
• Jumbo Rock Campground – Situated in the center of the park, Jumbo Rock Campground has amazing rock formations.

Where to Stay

Joshua Tree National Park doesn’t have accommodation inside the park outside of serviced campgrounds. However, there are a few options in nearby towns and incredible Airbnb options where you can stay in a dome or luxury tiny home.

If you’re looking for a close-to-nature experience, camping in the park is highly recommended. It allows for easy access to the park’s attractions. Several campgrounds are available within the park, offering basic amenities like restrooms and picnic tables.

Travel Tip! Joshua Tree is so popular that reservations for campgrounds can be booked weeks to months in advance for your dates. Reserve a spot early!

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Joshua Tree is during the late fall to early spring when temperatures are milder and more comfortable for outdoor activities. The park can be really hot during the summer months.

The best times to visit Joshua Tree National Park are during the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) seasons. These periods offer more moderate temperatures, making outdoor activities more enjoyable.

Spring brings a burst of vibrant wildflowers and blooming cacti. Fall is characterized by cooler weather and clearer skies, optimal conditions for hiking, rock climbing, and stargazing.

Summer (June to August) can be extremely hot with temperatures soaring above 100°F (37°C), making outdoor activities challenging.

Winter (December to February) brings cooler temperatures, but it is still possible to explore the park if you come prepared with warm clothing. Regardless of the season, plan ahead and check the weather forecast.

Getting to Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park is easily accessible from major cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, and Las Vegas.

Whether you’re driving from nearby cities or flying in and renting a car, there are three entrances: two in the north and one in the south.
