TSA Alarmed by Spike in Loaded Guns at This Major US Airport

In a concerning trend, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has reported a significant increase in firearms detected at one of Texas’s busiest travel hubs. Since January 1, 2025, TSA officers have discovered 49 firearms in carry-on luggage during routine X-ray screenings at San Antonio International Airport (SAT), with 43 of these weapons loaded.

All detected during routine checks, this surge includes three firearms found on consecutive days—June 1, 2, and 3—highlighting a growing issue that poses serious safety risks and legal consequences for travelers.

The TSA has emphasized the importance of proper firearm transportation. Travelers are reminded that firearms must be unloaded, packed in a locked, hard-sided case, and declared at the airline ticket counter to be transported in checked baggage. Firearms are strictly prohibited in carry-on luggage, regardless of concealed carry permits.

Travelers found with firearms at TSA checkpoints face serious consequences that go well beyond a simple warning. According to the TSA, civil penalties can reach as high as $12,210 depending on the circumstances. Factors such as whether the gun was loaded or if ammunition was accessible can affect the final amount.

TSA says individuals will also have their Trusted Traveler status and PreCheck eligibility revoked for a period of time. Offenders should also expect more intensive screening during future travel.

In 2024, TSA intercepted a total of 6,678 firearms at U.S. airports, with the majority being loaded. San Antonio’s figures, while lower than some larger airports, still place it among the top 25 to 30 airports nationwide for firearm interceptions.
