12 ‘Rattiest’ Cities in America Where Rodents Are Terrorizing Residents

Rats in the city are inevitable, and for many residents across America, dodging them on morning walks or spotting them running along a subway track is an everyday occurrence.

A new study, based on an annual report by Orkin, sheds light on the US cities with the most rat sightings. Orkin compiles its list by analyzing the number of new rodent treatments performed from September 1 to August 31 each year across residential and commercial areas.

These furry little critters have truly mastered the art of urban living, so here are the top 12 rattiest cities in America, a title these places would probably rather not claim.

According to the newly released Orkin study, Chicago has won the top award for 10 consecutive years, which might be almost impressive. The city has employed various strategies, from baiting to public awareness campaigns, but the rodents seem to have a talent for dodging traps.

More than 50,000 rat complaints to the city’s 311 hotline have been made every year since 2022.

2. Los Angeles, California

In sunny Los Angeles, where the palm trees sway, the rats are living their best lives. The city’s warm climate creates a perfect breeding ground for these furry troublemakers.

While having dinner near MacArthur Park, I was horrified to discover that what I thought were nocturnal squirrels were actually hordes of fat, well-fed rats.

3. New York City, New York

The Big Apple has a big rat problem, and having grown up in neighboring New Jersey, I’m shocked NYC didn’t win the top spot. Bags of trash line the sidewalks every day, and the subways are notorious for sightings.

In fact, according to a study done by NYC exterminator MMPC, up to 3 million rats could be living in the city. This would be a 50% increase just from 2010.

4. San Francisco, California

With the growing chaos on its streets since the pandemic, San Francisco has a rising rat population. The city has been battling the issue for years, but the issue may be further exacerbated by the growing homeless population and their makeshift encampments.

The city has initiated measures to tackle rat infestations. However, nonprofits are collaborating with legislators to reduce the use of rat poisons that harm wildlife, which might not be helping the rat problem.

5. Washington, D.C.

In the heart of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC, is facing its own rat dilemma. Amidst the historic landmarks and political drama, these rodents have made themselves at home. Officials have launched initiatives to combat the infestation, including public education campaigns.

6. Denver, Colorado

Denver might be known for its craft beer and scenic mountains, but rats have also found a cozy spot in this city. Urban sprawl and a growing population have created a rat-friendly environment.

City health officials are working hard to control the rat population, but the furry inhabitants seem to be quite comfortable.

7. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The ‘City of Brotherly Love’ is also home to a large rat population. With its dense urban landscape and old infrastructure, it’s no surprise that rats have made their way into the city.

8. Detroit, Michigan

Detroit may be experiencing a revitalization, but ongoing urban renewal efforts have inadvertently provided more hiding spots for these rodents. With abandoned buildings and vacant lots, these rodents have plenty of places to call home.

9. Baltimore, Maryland

As one of the most dangerous cities in America, Baltimore also has a rat problem.

However, the city has launched an initiative called “Rat Rubout,” which includes a team that handles 311 requests from locals and actively sets bait traps throughout the city. While it has shown some success in reducing rat sightings, they still remain a common sight for residents.

10. Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland is dealing with its own share of rat sightings as the city continues to grow. The blend of urban living and ample food sources creates a welcoming environment for these critters.

11. Minneapolis, Minnesota

In Minneapolis, the rat population is making its presence known, especially during the colder months when they seek warmth indoors.

Officials have implemented measures such as enforcing trash management and eliminating potential food sources to control the rat population.

12. Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is known for its rich history and clam chowder, but it’s also grappling with a significant rat problem. Boston’s aging infrastructure provides plenty of entry points for these rodents to make their way into buildings and homes. The city has taken steps to reduce the rat population, but it remains a challenge in this historic town.
