By December, national parks look very different from the summer versions most people picture. Most national parks are either buried in snow or quietly written off by travelers assuming everything worthwhile is closed for the season.
After two years on the road and 31 national parks checked off, I go south to warmer regions or get a reason to travel to a new US territory. These are the best national parks to visit in December if you’re looking to escape the winter cold.
This list takes into account seasonal weather patterns, crowd levels, trail conditions, road access, and real on-the-ground experience in each park. Based on those factors, these 12 parks stand out as the most practical and rewarding places to visit in December.

1. Everglades National Park, Florida
- Why December: Official dry season, when rainfall drops sharply and mosquito levels fall to their lowest point of the year.
- Weather: Daytime temperatures usually sit between 72°F and 78°F, with low humidity and cooler evenings that rarely dip below the low 60s.
Everglades covers more than 1.5 million acres, but December makes that enormous wetland much easier to deal with. Water levels begin dropping and animals concentrate around remaining pools, which gives Anhinga Trail and Shark Valley more action without summer rain constantly interrupting the day.
Flamingo is also a better base for boat trips once humidity eases and conditions across Florida Bay settle down. Nine Mile Pond is another good choice if paddling sounds better than another boardwalk.
A day through the Everglades can mix Shark Valley, Royal Palm and the southern end of the park. December is still Florida though, so sunscreen has not taken the month off.
2. Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida
- Why December: The park’s calmest sea window, when ferry cancellations are far less common than in summer.
- Weather: Highs hover near 75°F, with cooler nights around 68°F and lower wind speeds across the open water.
Dry Tortugas sits about 70 miles west of Key West, so reaching the park already feels more involved than pulling into a normal entrance station. Ferry and seaplane passengers arrive at Garden Key, where enormous Fort Jefferson takes up much of the island.
December is comfortable enough to explore the fort before heading straight into the water. Snorkeling around the moat wall and South Swim Beach can be especially good when marine conditions cooperate.
Those tiny strips of sand easily compete with some of the best beaches in the United States. Camping gives you a completely different park once the ferry passengers leave, although everything you need for the night has to come with you
3. Death Valley National Park, California
- Why December: The coolest daytime temperatures the park sees all year
- Death Valley Weather: Expect daytime highs between 60°F and 68°F, with nights dropping into the 40s°F around Furnace Creek.
Death Valley holds the record for the highest reliably recorded air temperature on Earth, which makes December feel almost suspiciously pleasant. Badwater Basin sits 282 feet below sea level and becomes a place you can actually walk around instead of photographing before fleeing back to air conditioning.
Golden Canyon and Artists Drive are also much easier now, while Dante’s View can be considerably colder because of the elevation. Lower winter sun adds deeper shadows around Zabriskie Point and the surrounding badlands. Badwater, the dunes and those striped hills easily belong among America’s strangest desert landscapes.
4. Saguaro National Park, Arizona
- Why December: Peak visibility in the Sonoran Desert.
- Saguaro Weather: Daytime temperatures usually range from 60°F to 70°F, while nights fall into the mid 40s°F.
A mature saguaro can live for well over a century, and December is one of the best months to spend hours walking among them without hunting for shade. Valley View Overlook and Bajada Loop cover the western district, while Cactus Forest Loop gives the eastern side a completely different feel.
Longer trails become far more tempting when the thermometer is sitting in the 60s. Several of the best hikes in Arizona are much friendlier once summer heat leaves the desert.
If you have a day around Saguaro, sunrise and late afternoon are the times I would protect first. Winter light sits low across the cactus forest and does far more for the scenery than another hour at midday
5. Big Bend National Park, Texas
- Why December: Most reliable month without extreme heat in the Chihuahuan Desert.
- Big Bend Weather: Highs usually land between 60°F and 72°F, with colder nights around the Chisos Basin.
Big Bend covers more than 800,000 acres, and December is finally cool enough to make those distances feel useful rather than intimidating. Santa Elena Canyon and Lost Mine are both much easier this month, while Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive connects some of the park’s best roadside stops.
The South Rim is a much bigger commitment and belongs among the harder hikes in US national parks. Short winter daylight makes an early start especially important if that trail is on the schedule.
A day through Big Bend is better spent focusing on one part of the park instead of trying to cross everything. Once darkness arrives, the lack of nearby cities becomes very obvious in the sky.
6. Joshua Tree National Park, California
- Why December: Although chilly, still one of the warmest in the country.
- Joshua Tree Weather: Expect highs around 58°F to 65°F, with nights that can fall close to freezing.
Joshua Tree sits where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet, which is why the scenery changes so much as you cross the park. December is cool enough for Hidden Valley, Barker Dam and Ryan Mountain without the desert deciding when your hiking day ends.
Rock climbers are out in force because cold stone is far more pleasant than summer rock. The Cholla Cactus Garden is also worth an early stop when the low sun catches the cactus.
A day around Joshua Tree can fit several short hikes before sunset. It is also one of the easiest day trips from Palm Springs, though anyone camping should prepare for nights that feel nothing like Southern California beach weather.
7. Biscayne National Park, Florida
- Why December: Calmer seas, making boat tours and snorkeling more dependable.
- Weather: Daytime temperatures stay near 75°F, with lower humidity and mild evenings.
Biscayne National Park protects over 170,000 acres of coral reef, mangrove shoreline, and open water. Its location also puts the park beside one of the country’s better known beach cities.
December improves conditions for guided snorkeling trips to Elliott Key and Boca Chita Key. Boca Chita Lighthouse remains a popular stop thanks to clearer views across Biscayne Bay this month.
Kayaking through the Jones Lagoon area becomes easier with reduced wind patterns. Most visitor experiences require advance boat reservations year-round.
8. Zion National Park, Utah
- Why December: December transforms Zion Canyon with snow-dusted cliffs and lower visitation levels.
- Zion Weather: Daytime highs average between 50°F and 55°F, with cold mornings inside the canyon.
Zion receives millions of visitors in a busy year, but December can make the main canyon feel completely different. Pa’rus Trail remains one of the easiest winter walks, while Canyon Overlook may pick up patches of snow around the shaded sections.
Angels Landing still requires a permit and ice can make an already exposed trail much more serious. It is one reason the hike belongs among the national park experiences tied to competitive permit systems.
There are plenty of things to do in Zion without making Angels Landing the entire trip. Pack traction when conditions call for it because red cliffs do not mean warm trails.
9. White Sands National Park, New Mexico
- Why December: December temperatures make full dune walks far more realistic than during warmer months.
- White Sands Weather: Highs usually stay between 55°F and 60°F, with cold evenings after sunset.
White Sands protects the largest gypsum dune field on Earth, stretching across roughly 275 square miles. December makes the Alkali Flat Trail much more manageable because the white surface is no longer throwing summer heat back at you.
Sledding still works in winter and sunset comes early enough that you do not spend half the evening waiting around. Wind can reshape exposed dune edges overnight, so even the same trail may look different the following morning.
A day at White Sands easily fits hiking, sledding and sunset. The park is also close enough to make one of the more unusual day trips from El Paso.
10. Virgin Islands National Park, U.S. Virgin Islands
- Why December: December marks the start of peak season, with lower humidity and calmer seas.
- Weather: Daytime temperatures range from 78°F to 82°F, with steady trade winds.
Virgin Islands National Park protects much of St. John, so December can involve a national park trail in the morning and snorkeling before lunch. Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay draw the biggest crowds, while Waterlemon Cay is worth the extra effort for stronger snorkeling.
Reef Bay Trail moves away from the beaches and passes historic plantation sites on the way toward the coast. December is the start of the busy season, so rental cars and lodging become much harder to wing at the last minute.
St. John easily earns a place among the best islands in the United States. The December version just comes with considerably more competition for a room.
11. National Park of American Samoa, Samoa
- Why December: Whale migration season.
- Weather: Daytime temperatures stay near 86°F, with warm water temperatures and periodic tropical rain showers.
National Park of American Samoa is the only US national park south of the equator, which immediately makes December here very different from December almost anywhere on the mainland. The park protects rainforest, volcanic slopes and coral reef areas across several islands.
Mount Alava Trail climbs above Tutuila for broad views while Lower Sauma Ridge gives you a much shorter route. Ofu is the bigger logistical challenge, but its coral reef is one of the main reasons travelers make the effort to reach the more remote islands.
Rain belongs in the forecast even during a good weather stretch, so slick trails are normal rather than a surprise. December here is less about escaping winter inside a national park and more about realizing just how far the US park system actually reaches.
